As a freelance writer specialising in travel and tourism, I often find myself compiling lists of the “Top 10 unmissable sights in” cities around the world. The weekend city break has become one of the staples of the travel industry in the past two decades, and there’s seemingly endless demand for ever quirkier destinations. Already been to Berlin, Prague and Budapest? Well how about Rovaniemi, Aarhus and Jerez de la Frontera?
But let’s face it – most of the classic city break destinations are phenomenally full of interesting things to see and do. And even if you’ve been to Berlin, Prague or Budapest a dozen times before, there’s always another new neighbourhood to discover, another intriguing restaurant that’s opened, or perhaps a chance to see an exciting new exhibition. Here are a few of the cities I go back to again and again…
Berlin
I go to Berlin every year, usually in August, because for me that’s when the city comes into its own. The vast expanses of greenery, the umpteen layers of history, and above all the high quality of life – all these things appeal to me as a Londoner who sometimes wishes his own city could be a little bit less chaotic. Take a look at this blog article I wrote after my last visit.
Tangier
Another city I visit time and again is Tangier in northern Morocco. I’ve always been fascinated by the place – by its unique position on the threshold of Africa, by its intriguing history, by the way it has exerted a magnetic pull on writers, artists and adventurers from around the world. This piece I wrote last year gives a flavour of what makes Tangier special.
Almeria
If you’re looking for a Spanish city that’s still largely untouched by tourism, then fly to Almeria – but don’t tell too many people! I’ve been there twice and am heading to Almeria again in March. The city itself is relaxed, sun-drenched and colourful; the surrounding countryside offers some outstanding walks along the coast and into Tabernas desert. Check out this blog post I penned in 2018. But keep it a secret!
Lisbon
The Portuguese capital has a special place in my heart. Oozing charm, ablaze with colour, perched on steep hills under screaming blue skies, criss-crossed by ancient yellow trams, it is just bursting with character. Whether it’s a daytime wander through the narrow lanes and alleys of the Alfama, an afternoon on the long sandy beaches of Caparica, or a night of hedonism in the Bairro Alto, Lisbon rocks. Take a look at this blog post I wrote a few years ago about the scintillating City of Light.
